Do you want to brush up on your blackjack lingo so that you cab look the part at the tables? Read our glossary below, and you will find all the slang you´ll need to look the part and sound the part. This doesn´t necessarily mean that you will win any more!
Blackjack Glossary (Terms and Slang)
- Anchor Man - the last seat of the table, on the dealer's right. This player goes last.
- Blackjack - an automatic win- a hand that contains an Ace and a 10 value card. This used to be a hand that contained an ace and a black jack (clubs or spades)
- Bust - going over 21, an automatic loss.
- Card Counter - someone who counts the cards as they are dealt. Very unpopular with the casinos and will get you banned if you are caught, so be subtle!
- Deck - 52 standard cards used in blackjack.
- Double Down - to double your bet with one card remaining to come from the dealer.
- Draw a Card - receive an additional card, in addition to your hand.
- Favorable Deck - the cards in the deck favour the player.
- First Base - the first seat of the table, on the dealer's left. The first to play
- Flat Bet - to bet equal amounts each hand.
- Floorman - the casino manager who runs the dealers.
- Hand - the original cards dealt to each player.
- Hard Total - any hand of cards that do not contain an ace or in which the ace counts as one.
- Head-to-Head - playing the dealer on your own.
- High Roller - a player who bets big.
- Hit - drawing an additional card.
- Hole Card - the dealer's face down card.
- House - the casino.
- Insurance - optional wager usually made when the dealer is showing an ace.
- Mucker - someone who cheats in a friendly who adds favorable cards to the deck.
- Multiple Deck - a game with more than one deck of cards in the shoe.
- Natural - slang for a blackjack.
- Nickels - slang for $5 chips.
- Paint - any face card: Jack, Queen, or King.
- Pat Hand - a first time hand of hard 17 or more.
- Penetration - the amount of cards the dealer deals before shuffling.
- Pit Boss - casino manager who is head of the whole blackjack pit.
- Push - a tie between the dealer and the player.
- Quarters - $25 chips. Slang.
- Round - completed play in which all players have acted on their hands.
- Shoe - the distribution box full of cards, that are dealt individually.
- Shuffle - to mix up the cards before dealing them.
- Single Deck - only one deck of cards is used.
- Snapper - blackjack (slang).
- Soft Total - any hand that has an ace with a value of 11.
- Splitting Pairs - to split identically ranked cards that are then played seperately.
- Stand - to hold your hand, not take any more cards.
- Stiff Card - a card from 2 to 6, which may oblige the dealer to hit.
- Stiff Hand - any hand with a sum of 12-16, which will bust with a 10 or face card.
- Surrender - to surrender half your bet, to cut your losses.
- Ten Poor Deck - a deck with lower than average 10 value cards.
- Ten Rich Deck - a deck with higher than average 10 value cards.
- Ten Value Card - 10s and face cards.
- Twenty-One - alternative name for blackjack.
- Unfavorable Deck - a deck that now contains cards that favour the dealer.
- Upcard - the dealer's face up card, seen by all players.
