Baccarat Scoring
All cards, ace through nine, are valued on their face vallue. Tens and face cards count as zero. When any hand totals over 10 , subtract 10 to get the baccarat score. So a 7 and 8 add up to 15, thus the baccarat score is 5.
The highest total any baccarat hand can have is nine. A two-card total of nine is called a natural and is unbeatable. An eight is the second best hand and is also known as a natural.
The cards are shuffled by the dealer and then reshuffled and placed in a covered box called the shoe.
When playing baccarat at a landbased casino, each player gets a turn to deal the cards from the show (the caller calls out the required moves). You normally bet against the bank when you have the shoe, but you may pass the shoe on to the the next player if you do not wish to deal. The caller gets the cards from the player with the shoe, places them in the adjacent boxes and then calls for another card or announces the winner.
If both player and bank have the same score, it is a tie and neither bank nor player wins. (It´s a push)
If neither hand has a natural (an 8 or 9), the player's hand is played first, followed by the dealer. If the first 2 cards total six or seven, no further cards can be drawn. If they total five or less, another card is drawn. No more than 3 cards may be drawn for either hand, and when both hands have been played, the hand closest to 9 wins.
You bet either on the player, bank, or a tie.
Winning bets made on the player or bank pays out at 1:1, even money.
The Tie bet pays out at 8:1.
Generally baccarat bets range from £20 to £2,000 , though games with a £20,000 maximum common on VIP tables.
After the winner is announced, the winning bets are paid out and the loser´s chips are collected. On the banker bet any winning bets must pay a 5% commission to the house. The commission is accumulated and recorded for each player in a numbered box. You can pay this commision when you like, but it must be paid when the shoe is completed.
The house edge in baccarat is low compared to other popular games such as roulette and slots. Even with the 5% commission on winning bank bets, the house edge only 1.37%. Avoid the Tie Bet, as although this pays out at 8:1, the house edge is increased to 14.1%.
